Snow Mold: Organic Lawn Care Tips to Resolve Snow Mold
Don’t be afraid of a little (or a lot) of snow mold this spring.
Snow mold happens when we have a winter with a lot of heavy snow cover, when the grass wasn’t cut short enough in the late fall (2”), and when our soil system is lacking beneficial biology to help combat the fungi that causes the snow mold fungus.
Because organic lawn care practices help to increase the biological populations in the soil, an organic lawn will be more resilient to this common issue. With this in mind, Complete Land Organics has a few tips help get your lawn up and growing this spring if you do experience an aggressive breakout.
3 organic lawn care strategies to deal with snow mold:
1. A stiff raking can help to gather up the loose dead grass, just be careful not to be too aggressive.
2. Make sure to be careful around the crowns of the grass plants, especially in the early spring when the plants are beginning to come out of dormancy and send out their first new shoots.
3. A light compost topdressing (1/8”-1/4”) with a Tri Rye Seed mixed right in will help in those thin and bare turf areas.
It’s important to remember that snow mold really is just a cosmetic issue. Even if you leave the lawn to its own devices, it should recover and quickly grow out of the superficial unsightliness. Be sure to choose organic practices in order to have the most sustainable lawn under all of Mother Nature’s conditions.
